Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a long-established method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing. This is achieved by inserting sterilised, single use, stainless-steel needles - which are as fine as a human hair - into specific points located near or on the surface of the skin which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to treat a wide variety of illnesses.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views a person as an energy system in which body, mind and soul are unified - each influencing and balancing the other. Unlike Western medicine which attempts to isolate and separate a disease from a person, Chinese Medicine emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person. Symptoms are not viewed in isolation but as a part of the whole individual.

At Red Dragon Alternative Medicine our practitioners make a Chinese medical diagnosis based upon a thorough history, examination and consultation. This examination may include the assessment of the pulse and tongue. Once a diagnosis is made the most appropriate acupuncture points for treatment are used and our practitioner will discuss the need for herbs, if any. Treatment plans are very much indivualised.

Qi (pronounced chee) can be defined as the "energy" or "vital substance" that animates and controls the observable functions of living beings. The basic foundation for Chinese medicine is that Qi flows through the body on channels known as meridians that connect all of our major organs. According to Chinese medical theory, illness arises when the cyclical flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced or is blocked. At Red Dragon Alternative Medicine we work on ensuring the energy continues to flow and remains balanced.

Other forms of treatment conducted at our Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture clinic in Campbelltown include:

ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE

Electro-Acupuncture is the use of small electrical currents through the acupuncture needles. Electro-stimulation is often used in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance a treatment. Electro-acupuncture has been proven to decrease pain, accelerate tissue healing, and significantly reduce inflammation, oedema and swelling.

MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion or Moxa is a technique in which a Chinese herb called mugwort is heated used to apply warmth to an acupuncture point. It does not touch the skin. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, moxibustion is often used to treat certain debilitating conditions as well as arthritis and pain, and to turn a breech baby. Moxa is usually rolled into a stick the size of a cigar, lit, and held over specific areas of the body. Moxa can also be placed onto the handle of an acupuncture needle, allowing deeper penetration of heat. No burning is felt, just a lovely sensation of warmth.

AURICULOTHERAPY

Also known as auricular therapy, ear acupuncture, and auriculoacupuncture, this type of acupuncture is based on the idea that the ear is a micro system which reflects the entire body. Specific points on the ear are stimulated in order to promote healing in other areas of the body. Auriculotherapy may be effective for the treatment of different types of pain, as well as neurological conditions.
